Mental distress is scientifically referred to as psychological distress. Psychological distress is largely defined as a state of emotional suffering characterized by symptoms of depression (e.g., lost interest; sadness;) and anxiety (e.g., inability to relax, feeling tense) (Mirowsky and Ross 2002).  These symptoms may be tied in with body symptoms such as inability to sleep; headaches; unexplained body aches, and fatigue. If psychological distress is mild, short term and is occurring in response to some bad change in your life then it may be an experience shared by many. This being said, it is useful to seek help if you are experiencing any feeling or having any behavior that’s disrupting your life.
